First of all, getting a scholarship in any sport is tough. A little over 7% of high school athletes (about 1 in 13) play a varsity sport in college. Less than 2% of high school athletes (1 in 57) went on to play at the NCAA Division I level.
The numbers for tennis are even lower than that. According to Scholarshipstats.com, Tennis has the highest percentage of foreign student-athletes competing than any other NCAA sport, and as a result, the odds of a US player making a D1 roster are the steepest – by far – of all NCAA sports. The odds of a US player competing at the NCAA III level are over 3 times better, primarily due to a much higher percentage of US players represented on D3 rosters.
Of the 331,901 young men and women who played tennis in high school in 2021-2022, less than 1% of them are playing at an NCAA Division I School. .06% for men and .5% for women.
What might stand out to parents even more than that statistic is the fact that if your child is lucky enough to get one of those scholarships, it will hardly make a dent in helping pay for your child’s college education.
